Merry Christmas Everyone!

Our December meeting was very traditional, with an interesting talk and tasting of some delicious seasonal breads. Also, Jenni was welcomed as a new member!

We're all looking forward very much to our next year of fascinating talks, activities and projects!

Some of us will be able to meet again for lunch on Friday 6th January...
............and we can all get together and find out how to get back into shape with the talk from the Chiropractor on 9th January!
Have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Frome Group W.I. Carol Service

What a lovely evening! Almost 50 WI members from Leigh on Mendip, Nunney, Kilmersdon, Buckland Dinham and Hemington gathered to celebrate together in a tradtional carol service in the beautiful St Giles church at Leigh on Mendip. Each WI provided a reader to unfold the Christmas story through the Bible readings, and the new vicar, Anthony, very kindly lead the service for us. Our organist did us proud, especially as she is a Leigh WI member; there was such a sense of warmth, cooperation together to make the whole event run seemlessly. Everyone stayed on to enjoy some mulled apple juice and savoury nibbles.

Thank you to everyone who came along and to all of the folk who helped to make it run so smoothly - from sweeping the church to organising the collection and clearing up afterwards!
(More of those inspiring women!)

Let's Cook Local course in this area!

Yes! I am now a fully trained 'Let's Cook Local' tutor!
I went to Stafford Federation HQ yesterday to spend the day learning all about this lottery funded project to help young lone parents to cook for their children using as much local produce as possible.
Now I need to find a venue, some people to take the course... and some helpers! Is anyone interested?
The course will be once a week for 6 weeks; on a week day possibly 10.30 - 12.30, as the idea is to cook and then eat together with the children (who will have been looked after in a creche during the cooking session). I guess it's not likely to begin until late January or early February.

Let me know if you would like to help out - on a volunteer basis, like me, but expenses will be paid.

Christmas Meal 2011

We had a Very Merry Evening last night at The Strode Arms in Cranmore - excellent company and nice food. The Secret Santa was a great success, as always! people are so very creative with thinking of unusual and fabulous gifts! Thank you  everyone!
PS These photos are mine which I took on my 'phone, hence the slightly grainy quality (only 1 glass of wine, honest!) - I'll post the better photos later on! (taken with a camera by a more experienced photographer!)

Craft Days in the Memorial Hall - change of date!

Following a very successful afternoon, scrap booking, sewing and Dorset Button making, we've put another 2 dates in the diary for anyone to come along with their crafts to enjoy the company, the space and the time to get on with it!

Monday 9th January & NOT Monday 6th February - we can't make this one.... watch this space for the next date - possibly Monday 13th February, to be confirmed!  10 am until 4 pm.
Bring your own craft and your own lunch.  Tea & coffee provided.
We share the cost of the hall hire between the people present.

Nature Walk on the Somerset Levels

Yesterday Sue V & I set off for the Peat Moors Centre near Shapwick to join the WI Nature Walk. It was sunny during the morning, so we were hopeful of a good afternoon.... we drove through the rain which dried up as we arrived!
There were 19 of us altogether, and as we were waiting for everyone to arrive we learned that our guide, Simon, had driven there from Stoke St Michael and the first WI members we met were from Binegar and Kilmersdon!
Thanks to the grey clouds and threat of the light going, we did a pretty fast walk along the south ditch to where Simon had seen the starlings roost the previous evening. He showed us how to spot otter tracks and signs of their activity on the way and pointed out various birds as we went. He said that they can never be sure where the starlings will roost and that no-one really knows exactly why they all gather together in such a spectacular way.
Well, we were very lucky and watched flock after flock flying in and just dropping out of the sky into the reed beds. It was simply fantastic! We watched, almost speechless (well, obviously not actually speechless!) for ages as more and more appeared. Simon suggested that we might like to return to precisely that spot the next morning just  before dawn when we would be able to see them all rise up and fly off to feed for the day.

I wonder if anyone else was there! I do plan to go again, one sunny afternoon in the next month or so.
