We walked the world!

We did it! Quite a large group of us set off this afternoon for a lovely walk around Leigh on Mendip, despite the threat of heavy showers! We were lucky as it hardly rained at all and we saw lots of blue skies! It was a bit muddy underfoot, 'though, and we did feel fortunate to have made it through one field without anyone slipping over! June B and Hazel did us proud with a beautifully decorated hall, delicious cakes (thank you all of the kind people who provided them) and a very welcome cup of tea. A very enjoyable afternoon, and quite something to feel solidarity with other walkers across the world in the few days surrounding ACWW day.

Women Walk the World - Sunday 27 April, 2.30pm

We're following the village access walk, leaving the hall at 2.30pm on Sunday. Please come along with all your family and friends to join in our support of the Association of Country Women World Wide 

ACWW works in partnership with its members, offering mutual support, friendship and practical help to women and communities around the world. ACWW has over 460 member societies active in over 70 countries.

With Consultative Status at the United Nations, ACWW gives women a voice at International level through its links with United Nations agencies. ACWW also funds small scale local development projects which are requested by local women to suit their needs. All applications for funding are assessed by the ACWW Projects Committee and projects are monitored throughout their life to ensure success.

Our Constitution states:

The members of ACWW, Associated Country Women of the World, who live in rural and urban areas, representatives of many races, nationalities and creeds, believe that peace and progress can best be advanced by friendship and understanding through communication and working together to improve the quality of life for all people. 

Community Coffee Morning is 10 years old!

What a very special treat to welcome two of our original members who joined Leigh on Mendip WI in 1949, as well as the daughter of another of our founding members.
Happy Birthday! 

What a great evening!

After a very full business section with such a wide range of events available for us to enjoy, we settled very quickly into the engrossing 'iris folding' activity. The ladies from Somer Craft Addix provided everything for each of us to create an amazing card! Sarah, Sue and Ivy were very patient and expert in their teaching skills and everyone was very happy with the end result.

We congratulated Barbara on the tenth anniversary of the community coffee morning. She thanked all of the people who have helped and made especial mention of Patricia Simpson, whose encouragement and support enabled her to set it up.
There are some posters in the hall showing the range of plants which will encourage bees to thrive in our gardens, and we have some postcards to send off to the Minister for Bees (a government office created thanks to the NFWI campaign to save our bees) to lend more support. Please ask me if you would like a card to send.
You will also find two information sheets from the ACWW on our hall notice board; please take some time to read them next time you have the chance. One concerns the use of plastic bottles (in particular drinks bottles and bottles for feeding babies) where harmful chemicals are transferred to the contents when the temperature is raised. The other is a reminder to ignore and delete scam emails which claim to be from friends in trouble asking you for money.

Make some time to read through this month's County News as there are a whole range of  activities to enjoy, from a variety of sports, to crafts, singing in Wells and a visit to a bee centre.

And finally... don't forget to come along and enjoy the village access walk on Sunday 27 April, leaving the hall at 2.30 and returning in an hour for tea and cake! The first year we were soaked to the skin, last year it was dry and overcast, so this year it will surely be a lovely sunny day.....?

Improved performance!

At last night's Hall Quiz our 'Ladies Who Lunch' team made a much better effort than last year! At one stage we were third on the results board! Woo hoo! We were the only team to score full marks on our 'joker' round! (Of course, it was the 'Food & Drink' section!).
It was a fun evening, thank you very much Sue and the Hall committee for organising it.

April lunch together

A select group of us shared a different venue today for lunch; we went to the Strode Arms in Cranmore. The food was very good, and, as always, the company was great! We had a good time together.
Our next date is Friday 2 May. Does anyone have any suggestions for a venue?

On Monday 14 April our very own Community Coffee morning will be 10 years old! 

Congratulations to Barbara and her team of helpers for providing this consistent service to our villagers.
Any opportunity to have a party? Shall we all make a special effort to drop in for a coffee and celebrate their success?
