Leigh on Mendip Summer Fair - Cake & Produce Stall

Saturday 13th June saw us again running the Cake & Produce Stall at the Village Fair. Thanks to everyone who baked cakes, biscuits, bakes and buns, as well as donations of preserves and rhubarb and cards. After a slowish start, we eventually sold every single item and made a healthy sum towards the shared fair profits. Many members were involved the night before pricing and sorting goodies, selling on the stall itself and/or helping on several other group's stalls on the day. Great team work everyone! As this is our main fundraiser of the year, our part in this is really important.

Somerset Wildlife Trust

We have talked about the Wildflower Project in our meetings.

Here is the information on the walk being organised by Somerset Wildlife Trust on
SATURDAY 20 JUNE.

We’re meeting at the Leigh on Mendip village hall at 1pm. The walk will be fairly short but will hopefully give us the chance to spot lots of wildlife including all things growing in the ground, crawling or flying!

We’ll be walking the path around the local quarry and popping down to have a look at the meadow we’re restoring on the south bank of the quarry. The walk will be suitable for all ages and should take around 2 hours. Please bring clothes suitable for the weather conditions on the day!

I look forward to seeing you there.

June Meeting

Our meeting in June came just a few days after the National AGM which had been screened live for the first time in the Memorial Hall. Everyone agreed this had been a great success. Thanks were given to Caroline for organising it and to everyone who provided cakes or helped in any other way.

Mary gave us a brief report on her attendance in London but was planning a fuller one on the blog as soon as she had time. She did highlight the conflict and disappointment caused by the confusing wording of the resolution which meant that, although the delegates agreed with the ethos behind it, they could not vote on it in its current form.  On a more positive note it had been an enjoyable day with some good speakers and a rare chance to share a venue with the Queen and other members of the Royal Family.

Still on a royal theme, Jane told us about her and Caroline’s visit to the Buckingham Palace Garden Party which they both thoroughly enjoyed; pictures here on the blog! For all other business matters see the minutes.

Our speaker was an education volunteer from the RNLI. He gave us a version of the talk he mainly gives to school children and included some useful information and question sheets which highlighted both the hazards present on our beaches and the work the RNLI do to address these and keep people safe.

Our next meeting will be on Monday 13th July at 7.30 with a talk on Palestine which will be open to guests, both male and female.

JUNE - What a Busy Month!

It's only 5 June and so much has already happened!

The next meeting is on Monday 8 June and we look forward to seeing our members.  There will be a talk from Geoff White on his work with the RNLI.

Then on Saturday 13 June we will be joining in helping and enjoying ourselves at the Village Summer Fair.  Don't forget the evening event too!  A chance to put your feet up, have a drink and listen to some music.
  • Cakes and Produce to Mary's house on Friday 12 June between 3 and 7pm only.
  • Please return your Raffle tickets - preferably on Monday 8th or otherwise on Fete Day.

WI AGM - Live Screening in Leigh

Latest technology comes to Leigh on Mendip Hall.  Many thanks to Caroline for 'masterminding' the live streaming of the WI AGM.
Members from other Institutes joined us - some all day and others for part of the day.  We joined in singing 'Jerusalem' and 'God Save The Queen'.
It was an amazing day and one really felt you were there in the Albert Hall. In fact at times I think we had a better view of people including the Queen, Princess Ann and Sophie, Countess of Wessex. The speakers were brilliant
Sadly we didn't see Mary on the big screen but I'm sure she had a wonderful day and we look forward to hearing all about it.
Thank you to everyone who helped in anyway making cakes, serving coffee and selling raffle tickets.

Everyone can now watch part or all of this online at

Buckingham Palace

Don't they look gorgeous!
Two members (Jane & Caroline) enjoyed a special treat along with 8000 other WI members at a garden party at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday 2 June.  They enjoyed wandering around the extensive gardens and the delicious tea.  It was very windy and many hats were seen blowing away from their owners though Jane's and Caroline’s fascinators stayed put! They very much enjoyed spending the afternoon with Sparks.
