Meeting January 2015

An unusual start to the January meeting when 4 members of the committee performed a comical short version of Cinderella for us. Everything was said in a completely deadpan way which made it very funny. Just before the meeting arrangements for the coming year included subs being paid, raffle prizes handed in, new programmes being given out and our votes on topics for the resolutions being taken in. Business matters included a reminder about the WI birthday party at the end of the month when we would play bingo and enjoy cake as part of the refreshments and the next lunch date on 6th February. Margaret had agreed to organise these and would like some input on the location of the next one, maybe the George at Nunney.

Our talk was given by WI member Paula, who told us all about a concrete tower which had been built as a folly/mausoleum in a village called Sway in the New Forest, by a Mr A Petersen, a pioneer in this type of construction. It was completed in 1885 but had fallen into disrepair and Paula’s connection had arisen through her conservation work in the area. As well as the tower we saw pictures of many of the distinctive buildings in Sway built by Mr Petersen, again all in concrete. It was a very interesting talk and I’m sure many of us will make a point of going to look at the buildings if we are in the area.

The next meeting will be at 7.30pm on Monday 9th February when a caricaturist will come along to entertain us, £3 charge for anyone who would like her to do a caricature of them.

The full minutes of the meeting can be read under "Previous Meetings" on the right-hand menu.

Happy New Year to all our Members

Happy New Year to our current and potential members!

Here's hoping that you all remembered Sue's tips on table etiquette over the festive period and not an untidy napkin to be seen! Read the minutes from the December meeting under the Previous Meetings section to the right.

We look forward to another year of fun with our 2015 programme and some additional events for the WI's Centenary.

The monthly lunch will be held on Friday 9th January at The Bell Inn.

Our first meeting is Monday 12th January, 7.30pm in the Memorial Hall.  Please remember to bring along your subs payment (£36 - cheques made payable to Leigh on Mendip WI) along with an offering for our raffle prize stock.

We are still without a permanent President and short in numbers overall on committee. Our committee meeting is on Monday 5th January, 8pm at Mary's house - anyone who would like to come along and just see what we talk about, before committing to joining us, is most welcome.

As always any ladies in the area interested in joining WI are welcome to come along as a visitor for a couple of meetings first. So why not make this your New Year's Resolution to get out and meet new people and make some time for yourself?

Here's to a fantastic WI 2015!

Your committee.

Wells Winter Festival

Thank you Sue R for organising our winter outing.  We met at the Palace in the afternoon and wandered around in our groups looking at the amazing floral displays in the rooms - from Victorian-style,
commeration of WW1, the Future and an enchanting The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe.  There were plenty of lovely Christmas items for sale in the marquee and
leaving in the dark the grounds of the Palace looked quite magical with the illuminations.

We also went to St Cuthberts Church to see 200 different Nativity scenes including a life-size knitted set (raising funds for St Peter's Hospice in Bristol).

Group Carol Service

A number of our members attended the Group Carol Service on Friday 5 December.  Another lovely festive event with readings and poems by different Institutes and singing of carols.  Thank you Nunney for organising and serving warming mulled fruit juice and delicious nibbles after the service.  We then adjourned to The George for our normal monthly lunch.  Good food and good company.  Perhaps we could come here again another month?  Thank you to Caroline for organising us - such a pity you weren't able to join in.

Happy Christmas and Goodbye!

We all said a sad farewell to Sparks at our Christmas meal, held at the Bell Inn on Monday 1st December.  We presented her with 2 framed  prints of Leigh On Mendip along with Garden vouchers, chocolates and biscuits (to share with the boys and Ruby!).  We were pleased to hear that Sparks has already found her local WI and the President is a near neighbour, so straight into Devon WI (just sit on your hands and don't mention having been President here).

Hazel Park won the attendance prize for 2014 (or "best behaved" member) and there was much chatter and laughter along with a lovely meal.

What do Committee do when they are not planning your meetings and outings?

Visit NT Killerton House (nr Exeter) for the Christmas festival and costume exhibition of course.  A 2 hour drive if direct from LOM, but worth a visit if you are down that way.

The Nutcracker theme was truly magical.
