Kilmersdon Road Show March 10th 2015

We were welcomed by County Chairman Margaret Bigg who introduced all the board of trustees and WI advisers. They all enthused about the various committees they served on and encouraged us to join in all the events to be organised this year.

While we listened the centenary baton was passed round to everyone in the hall. And we heard about all the events the baton committee had been to in the last week.

After the business we walked to the bottom of Jack and Jill hill and Margaret Bigg dressed as Jill and the Avon County chairman dressed as Jack posed for photographs of Jill passing the baton to Jack. 

 

 

 

 

 

After lunch our speaker was the town crier from Wells who gave us the history of the town crier and he passed on lots of gems of wisdom.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Finally 3 members of Kilmersdon entertained us with a short ditty about HRT. An excellent day out and a pity more members are not interested in attending.

Meeting Monday 9 February 2015

The February meeting was chaired by Caroline who reminded us we need a permanent President by May so all members need to consider if they could put themselves forward for this and thus keep the group going.

Those who came to the Bingo Birthday Party in January had a really good time but it was a pity more members were unable to attend. Thanks were again given to Frank Higgins for being our caller and to those who donated prizes and cakes. The February first Friday lunch in the Bell had been well attended and it was decided to try the Waggon and Horses for the next one which would be on Friday 6^th March from 12.15. Other future dates included the Road Show at Kilmersdon on the 10^th March, the village clean up on Sat 14^th, the Group meeting on Thurs 26^th and a live screening of the National AGM in the Memorial Hall on Thurs 4^th June between 10 and 4. The plan for this was to provide some simple refreshments but to ask people to bring their own lunch. They could stay all day or dip in and out as they wished.

Our speaker was caricaturist Sarah Bailey.  She gave us a talk full of enthusiasm which explained how her love of drawing started and developed so that she is now able to make a living from it. Afterwards some of the members had their own caricature created by her for a small fee.

The next meeting at 7.30pm on Monday 9^th March will include a talk from Happy Landings Animal Shelter. They have asked for any old bedding etc. to be donated, in any condition, so this is the ideal chance to have a sort out for a good cause.

Guess Who???

This is how Sarah Bailey, our speaker on Monday night, saw us.  She gave a very entertaining talk and later demonstrated her skills as a Caricaturist.  It was lovely to see so many members present.

Ladies who Lunch!

5 members met on Friday at The Bell for lunch.  We had a good time catching up on news and had to wonder if Friday was a "special women's day".  Not one but two other groups of ladies came into the pub for lunch and at times it got quite noisy!  One brave man came in for a drink.  Hope those who were feeling unwell and unable to join us are much better now.  Margaret will have news about the next lunch in March.

66 Years Young

Last night we celebrated the 66th Birthday for our WI in Leigh on Mendip.  Possibly a 'first' we had a fun evening of Bingo for our party!  Frank had kindly agreed to be our 'caller' and after a brief explanation of the game the Bingo got under way in earnest - with a number of prizes going to those 'first time' players!

Caroline had made a fantastic Birthday cake - not just for our Institute but also for her husband Graham, who was also celebrating his birthday (not the same year!) that day.

And then we sang Happy Birthday to Frank (who is also celebrating his birthday this weekend).

It was a lovely evening.  Thank you to all members and partners who came to our fun evening and we missed those who were unable to make it.

Here's to the next 66 years!

Meeting January 2015

An unusual start to the January meeting when 4 members of the committee performed a comical short version of Cinderella for us. Everything was said in a completely deadpan way which made it very funny. Just before the meeting arrangements for the coming year included subs being paid, raffle prizes handed in, new programmes being given out and our votes on topics for the resolutions being taken in. Business matters included a reminder about the WI birthday party at the end of the month when we would play bingo and enjoy cake as part of the refreshments and the next lunch date on 6^th February. Margaret had agreed to organise these and would like some input on the location of the next one, maybe the George at Nunney.

Our talk was given by WI member Paula, who told us all about a concrete tower which had been built as a folly/mausoleum in a village called Sway in the New Forest, by a Mr A Petersen, a pioneer in this type of construction. It was completed in 1885 but had fallen into disrepair and Paula’s connection had arisen through her conservation work in the area. As well as the tower we saw pictures of many of the distinctive buildings in Sway built by Mr Petersen, again all in concrete. It was a very interesting talk and I’m sure many of us will make a point of going to look at the buildings if we are in the area.  

The next meeting will be at 7.30pm on Monday 9^th February when a caricaturist will come along to entertain us, £3 charge for anyone who would like her to do a caricature of them.
