Litter Pick - Saturday 14 March

Thank you to everyone in the Village who turned out to help clear litter from the roads and lanes of Leigh on Mendip.  Many hands make light work!  Hopefully, when others see the area looking so good they will think twice before throwing rubbish out of car windows.

Thank you also to the ladies who provided tea and cakes on our return to the Hall.  Delicious!

Meeting on 9 March 2015

March was Barbara’s turn to chair the meeting, with quite a lot of news about events members had attended and occasions to come. Sue Rodford had information about a meadow project run in conjunction with Somerset Wildlife Trust where she had learnt all about planting areas with wild flowers and also told us about an upcoming non WI outing, a garden festival at the Bishop’s Palace in Wells which will run from 20th to 24th June, more info online.

The first Friday lunch in March at the Waggon and Horses had not taken place as it was thought very few were free. However this turned out not to be the case so can we all be sure to reply to Margaret’s e mail one way or the other in future so she knows at least approximate numbers, it does usually have to be booked up. We are going to try again with the Waggon and Horses in April on Friday 10th (first one being Good Friday).

Jan told us about a walking tour on Fri 24th July round a farm which specialises in rearing chickens starting around 10.30 and including lunch, you should have received an e mail on this.

Unfortunately our speaker from Happy Landings Animal Shelter was taken ill earlier in the day and had to cancel. Margaret had stepped into the breach with a quiz based on numbers and letters standing for “well known” phrases and facts. There were 80 questions and it’s easy to judge how hard it was from the fact the winning team only scored 38. Strangely though most of us found it really absorbing and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. If time hadn’t been called I think one or two may still be there determined to solve it all!

The next meeting will be on Monday 13th April at 7.30pm, the talk being titled “Pudding Kitchen”, hope we get some tasters!

Kilmersdon Road Show March 10th 2015

We were welcomed by County Chairman Margaret Bigg who introduced all the board of trustees and WI advisers. They all enthused about the various committees they served on and encouraged us to join in all the events to be organised this year.

While we listened the centenary baton was passed round to everyone in the hall. And we heard about all the events the baton committee had been to in the last week.

After the business we walked to the bottom of Jack and Jill hill and Margaret Bigg dressed as Jill and the Avon County chairman dressed as Jack posed for photographs of Jill passing the baton to Jack.

After lunch our speaker was the town crier from Wells who gave us the history of the town crier and he passed on lots of gems of wisdom.

Finally 3 members of Kilmersdon entertained us with a short ditty about HRT. An excellent day out and a pity more members are not interested in attending.

Meeting Monday 9 February 2015

The February meeting was chaired by Caroline who reminded us we need a permanent President by May so all members need to consider if they could put themselves forward for this and thus keep the group going.

Those who came to the Bingo Birthday Party in January had a really good time but it was a pity more members were unable to attend. Thanks were again given to Frank Higgins for being our caller and to those who donated prizes and cakes. The February first Friday lunch in the Bell had been well attended and it was decided to try the Waggon and Horses for the next one which would be on Friday 6th March from 12.15. Other future dates included the Road Show at Kilmersdon on the 10th March, the village clean up on Sat 14th, the Group meeting on Thurs 26th and a live screening of the National AGM in the Memorial Hall on Thurs 4th June between 10 and 4. The plan for this was to provide some simple refreshments but to ask people to bring their own lunch. They could stay all day or dip in and out as they wished.

Our speaker was caricaturist Sarah Bailey.  She gave us a talk full of enthusiasm which explained how her love of drawing started and developed so that she is now able to make a living from it. Afterwards some of the members had their own caricature created by her for a small fee.

The next meeting at 7.30pm on Monday 9th March will include a talk from Happy Landings Animal Shelter. They have asked for any old bedding etc. to be donated, in any condition, so this is the ideal chance to have a sort out for a good cause.

Guess Who???

This is how Sarah Bailey, our speaker on Monday night, saw us.  She gave a very entertaining talk and later demonstrated her skills as a Caricaturist.  It was lovely to see so many members present.

Ladies who Lunch!

5 members met on Friday at The Bell for lunch.  We had a good time catching up on news and had to wonder if Friday was a "special women's day".  Not one but two other groups of ladies came into the pub for lunch and at times it got quite noisy!  One brave man came in for a drink.  Hope those who were feeling unwell and unable to join us are much better now.  Margaret will have news about the next lunch in March.
