January Breakfast

Looking scrummy - croissants, toast and coffee still to come
Looking scrummy - croissants, toast and coffee & tea still to come!

11 members (and one husband!) came out on a very cold morning and we were made to feel so welcome sitting in Shelagh's sunny kitchen.

£55.50 was raised for us to send to Denman for their Fundraising.
 People were asking:

"When's the next breakfast"??!!

Thank you to Barbara for doing all the hardwork providing us with such a lovely breakfast.

If anyone has another good idea for a Denman Fundraiser please let the Committee know and we will see if members can make it happen!

Monthly Meeting January 2017

Since the magazine last came out Christmas has been and gone of course. Before that at our December meeting we made some of our own cards from the wide variety of materials that had been assembled for us with varying but overall very good results.

In January subs of £39 were due and Mary had once again produced some attractive programmes with our plans for the meetings in the year ahead. In addition to these we had several events to look forward to. There was the Denman fundraiser breakfast arranged by Barbara on Friday 13th January and later in the month the Birthday Party tea on the 29th.  Looking ahead to March there was the Roadshow on the 13th at Beckington, final numbers for this to be taken at the February meeting and Barbara encouraged us to attend this if possible as it was in our area for once. We were also thinking about the fete in June as we no longer have a representative for that committee. Barbara emphasized how much we rely on the fete for fundraising and urged members to consider volunteering to take this job on. We also need someone to take charge of the raffle prizes.

Our speaker, Jane Norris, had worked as a nurse/midwife for many years. She had come from a family of midwives and always knew it was the career she wanted. However she preferred not to stay in one job or place for too long and had spent time in various areas of the UK, the Navy and, definitely the most interesting location for us, in the Labrador region of Canada. This was extremely remote with thick snow in winter, generally difficult and unpleasant living conditions and populated by very poor underprivileged people in small villages, so Jane and her colleagues were performing a vital service.

Our February meeting at 7.30 on Monday 13th will include a talk on Frome FM radio.

Monthly Meeting in December

Such talented members!

We all had fun making our own
Christmas cards with material 'cut out' trees
and other decorations.

Christmas Tree Festival

Leigh on Mendip Church held a Christmas Tree Festival the weekend of 10/11 December. Thank you to Sue Rodford, Caroline and Shelagh for making the decorations for our beautiful tree.  It was a lovely occasion and raised funds for FOLC.

Christmas Meal

Many of our members had great fun at our Christmas Meal at The Bell on Thursday 6 December.  Thank You to Mary for organising the event.  At the end of the meal we all had a 'Secret Santa' present and Barbara gave best attendance prizes to Ann Orpwood & Christine (and also to Hazel Parks at the monthly meeting the following week).

Monthly Meeting for November

LEIGH ON MENDIP WI

Some final arrangements were made for Christmas events at our November meeting. We were reminded about the Secret Santa presents for the Christmas meal and to make our food choices if not already done. The Carol Concert in Kilmersdon clashed with the monthly lunch in the Bell on Friday 2nd Dec but it was decided to go ahead with the latter albeit at the later time of 12.45. The FOLC Christmas fair would take place on Friday 9th December and members were asked to make cakes to pass to Barbara who is running a cake stall there or at least to come along between 6 and 9pm. That weekend too is the Christmas tree festival in the church where the WI entry on a Scandinavian theme will be on display with the others.

As mentioned last month don’t forget the Denman fundraiser breakfast at Barbara’s house on 13th January from 10am, entry £5. Also in January will be our 68th birthday party on the afternoon of Sunday 29th when we will enjoy tea and cakes along with any friends, partners etc. who would like to join us. Venue to be decided. Finally if you have any old unused spectacles Caroline would love to receive them for her recycling project.

Our speaker session in November was very different to most.  A laughter therapist led us through many different exercises which were basically just making ourselves laugh but interacting with each other. Research has shown that the many advantages of laughter which include stress and depression relief are just as effective with “pretend” laughter as the natural kind. I think some of us may have felt a little silly at first but it was surprisingly easy to get into the spirit of things and just laugh!

Our next meeting will be on Monday 12th December at 7.30pm when fellow members will help us make Christmas cards and we will hear about the choices for the Resolutions.
