Food & Farming explained!

Last night's meeting proved to be a great success!
Thanks to our excellent speaker, James Small, the Chairman of Somerset County NFU who farms near Priddy. He gave us a very informative and interesting talk about farming and food. He covered many angles, from the Common Agricultural Policy, the environment and the food we choose to buy as well as the high standards of animal welfare practised by British farmers today. We need to think globally and about the future of farming if it is to meet the needs of the growing population as well as realising how we, as consumers, can affect what is produced.

I think it's safe to say that he explained all of the issues we raised at our resolutions meeting back in May; there were plenty of questions and discussion, making it a very lively evening.

We rounded it off with some tasty scones, local home made jams and a generous helping of Cornish clotted cream - our Alternative Jam Festival in recognition of the National WI jam festival which took place over the weekend at Denman College.
